Recently this Blog received many spam comments, it wasn’t appeared on the main page though but it filled up the inbox. By the definitions Spam is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages, which are generally undesired. In Blogsphere, spam is defined as spaming on weblogs. Spam on weblog appeared since 2003 by taking advantage over the open nature of comments in the blogging software Movable Type. Spamer begins their activity by repeatedly placing comments to various blog posts that provided nothing more than a link to the spamer’s commercial web site.
Wordpress as a popular Blog engine also become a big target of spamer. Using machine generated comments spamer could placed hundreds of links on your “naked” wordpress easily. But you don’t have to worry since the creator of WordPress created Akismet anti spam plugin as well.
Activating Akismet plugin is the first and easy thing to do on your WordPress Blog. You need an API key from wordpress.com to activate Akismet. If you don’t have account on wordpress.com just register and get your API key from your user profile. Enter your API keys on Akismet configuration, validate it and it will protect your wordpress.
Akismet is a good spam eater, but its better to have redundant protection against spamer. Since Akismet doesn’t protect trackback entry point, eventually it becomes a good way for spamer to sent you unwanted comments. Therefore you better add Simple Trackback Validation Plugin for your second Blog protector. It will check every trackback to your Blog and invalid trackback will be moved into need-moderation category. You can simply delete those unwanted trackbacks.
Another protection is using “Human Validation” plugin for your comment’s box. You can read about it in this post
