Yahoo Messenger is one of the most popular instant-messaging programs and it’s easy to see why: a simple-to-use program supported by a massive online community, and it’s all free.
All you have to do is get yourself a Yahoo ID (by signing up for one at the Yahoo UK website) and download a very small installation program.
The set-up procedure is slightly confusing, as you are presented with several different options and it’s not always obvious which ones to choose. The offer of a free Yahoo email address, for example, may be appealing to some, but the set-up procedure also attempts to set your browser’s homepage to Yahoo, which might annoy some users.

If you want to distribute files, either from a CD or across the Internet, they need to be provided in a format that can easily be handled by all users, from advanced through to beginner level. For instance, many new users may not know what to do when presented with a ZIP archive. Although the facility to unarchive a ZIP file is embedded within Windows and Mac OS X, how does the end-user know where to put the files within the ZIP?
Another option is to produce a self-extracting ZIP archive that prompts the end-user for a destination. Still not the ideal solution as the end-user needs to know where they should store the program files. If you’re a freeware developer, you also need to purchase a commercial application to produce a self-extracting ZIP archive.

Searching through websites across the Internet can be a relatively hit and miss affair. For instance, although Google does a fantastic job of collating various websites, how do you sort out the good from the bad? How do you know that by clicking on a link from a search engine, you won’t end up on a rogue site or similar?

GooglePreview is a tool that enables you to quickly see a visual representation of the search engine results within your browser window. By seeing a visual image of the search result, you can get a better idea of the destination of your web browser, when you click on the link.

When testing your web pages, there’s nothing better than testing them live. To do this, you need a web browser and you’ll be able to see the pages as the millions of other (potential) users will browse your site, worldwide.
However, your pages do not need to be online to view them in a browser. You can access the pages from a localhost or across the network. If you have a fast broadband connection, you can test them on a pre-live server which your developers may use for testing pages before they commit changes.
